Football club Al-Ahly of Egypt end contract with coach Riveiro following seven games
Al-Ahly Part Ways with Coach Jose Riveiro After Disappointing Start to Season
Egyptian football giants Al-Ahly have terminated the contract of Spanish coach Jose Riveiro, following a series of disappointing results in both domestic and international competitions.
The announcement was made on the club's official website after their early exit from the FIFA Club World Cup held in the United States. Al-Ahly, the most decorated club in African Champions League history, failed to deliver a strong performance under Riveiro's leadership, losing to Brazil's Palmeiras and drawing two matches.
In the Egyptian Premier League, Al-Ahly currently sit in 12th place with five points, having played four league matches, registering one win, two draws, and one loss. Their only win in the league was against an unspecified opponent, while they have drawn against two other unspecified opponents.
The team's most recent defeat came in a 2-0 loss to rivals Pyramids in the league on Saturday, a result that may have contributed to the decision to terminate Riveiro's contract. The termination was by mutual consent, and the new coach of Al-Ahly is Martin Jol.
In a statement, Al-Ahly released thanks to Riveiro and his assistant staff for their efforts during their tenure. Jose Riveiro, 49, was appointed as coach in May on a two-year contract.
The team's performance in the league has been inconsistent, with wins, draws, and losses, and the early exit from the FIFA Club World Cup was another disappointing result for Al-Ahly during Riveiro's tenure. Riveiro's tenure with Al-Ahly failed to deliver the expected results, and the team's poor performance in the league may have also played a role in the decision to terminate his contract.
