Football legend Toni Kroos recognized in Greifswald: Awarded the Merit Order of the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and inscribed in the Golden City Book
Toni Kroos Honoured in Hometown Greifswald
Football star Toni Kroos was honoured in his hometown of Greifswald last week, with around 1,000 guests in attendance. The event, held at the Volksstadion, was a celebration of Kroos's impressive career and his commitment to social causes.
The Mayor of Greifswald expressed great pride in honouring Kroos, a native of the city who began his football career with the Greifswalder SC. Minister President Manuela Schwesig praised Kroos as a role model beyond the world of sport, while the Mayor thanked him for his social and societal commitment.
Among the invited guests were 500 children from Greifswald's football clubs, as well as approximately 160 young dancers from the Ostseetanz dance school. The foundation established by Kroos, which supports severely ill children and their families, has also made a significant impact in the city. The foundation has supported the children's clinic of the University Medicine Greifswald and the Ambulant Children and Youth Hospice Service Leuchtturm in Greifswald.
After the ceremony, a symbolic game of foosball was played between Kroos, Minister President Schwesig, and Dr. Stefan Fassbinder. The table football used in the game is individually designed and features a Toni Kroos-Greifswald design. The signed table football will be auctioned online from July 25 to benefit children's and youth sports in Greifswald. The auction link will be announced on the city's social media channels next week.
In addition to the foosball game, Kroos was presented with the Order of Merit of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The footballer, who will end his career at the end of 2024 in his hometown of Greifswald, was grateful for the honour and expressed his commitment to continuing his work in the community.
The event was a fitting tribute to a hometown hero, and a testament to Kroos's enduring impact on the city of Greifswald.
