BVB Season Opening Service Highlights Integration, Faith, and Football

On August 21, 2025, the ecumenical BVB Season Opening Service took place in Dortmund, Germany, emphasising the importance of football in promoting integration and cohesion. The service, held under the motto of bringing football and faith together in an open, uniting atmosphere, was a significant event in the "BVB Founder Church" project.

The service was led by Prof. Dr. Aladin El-Mafaalani, a renowned sociologist and publicist, who delivered the sermon. Singer-songwriter and BVB fan Matthias "Kasche" Kartner enlivened the service with his music, providing a melodious backdrop to the proceedings. Project leader Stefan Magh from the Archbishop's General Vicariate in Paderborn explained the plans for the project on site during the service.

The theme of the service focused on the "tension between genuine love and turbo-capitalism". This theme was a reflection of the project's aim to create a cultural, spiritual, and social meeting place that combines football history, city history, and faith.

Due to the ongoing renovation of the Church of the Holy Trinity, the service was held in the Welcome Tent and on the lawn next to the church building. Small groups were able to take a peek at the construction site after the service. Upon completion of the renovation work at the end of 2026, the Church of the Holy Trinity will reopen as a cultural, spiritual, and social meeting place.

The collaboration for the construction of the "BVB Gründerkirche" in 2026 involves the ecumenical community connected to Borussia Dortmund (BVB), the Dreifaltigkeitskirche parish near the Borsigplatz, and the Archdiocese of Paderborn. This collaboration aims to create a space that will not only serve as a place of worship but also as a hub for community activities and football-related events.

The service was part of a peace initiative, with a peace advocate being erected and blessed by Pastor Meinolf Wacker as a visible sign against war, hate, agitation, and exclusion. Pastor Meinolf Wacker also blessed the Peace Monument, erected next to the Welcome Tent during the service.

The support of the football club's children and youth work was highlighted as particularly important and in need of further expansion. The BVB Season Opening Service was a testament to the club's commitment to fostering a sense of community and promoting integration through football. Community worker Karsten Haug, Pastor Friedrich Laker of the evangelical Lydia congregation, and Pastor Meinolf Wacker from Kamen were among those involved in the service.

In conclusion, the BVB Season Opening Service was a successful event that brought together football, faith, and community in a unique and meaningful way. It marked a significant step forward in the "BVB Founder Church" project and underscored the club's dedication to making a positive impact in Dortmund.
