Footballer Lucas Paqueta Contemplates Filing Lawsuit Against FA Over Betting Scandal; West Ham United Declines Pursuit of Compensation
In a significant turn of events, the English Football Association (FA) has cleared Lucas Paqueta of misconduct charges related to betting, following an extensive investigation.
The allegations against the West Ham United midfielder, which were first revealed in August 2023, centred around his performance in English Premier League (EPL) games. Specifically, it was alleged that Paqueta intentionally received yellow cards in four EPL games in 2022 and 2023, with the aim of manipulating betting outcomes.
However, the commission concluded that Paqueta's conduct did not show any intention to deliberately receive yellow cards. This decision aligns with Paqueta's suggestion that he has no interest in betting.
The investigation was prompted by suspicious betting patterns related to Paqueta in these four EPL games. A total of 253 people placed £47,000 ($63,087) worth of bets on the player. The total profit from these bets was a substantial £167,000 ($224,163).
Investigators did not find any mention of betting or gambling on Paqueta's phones. Furthermore, Paqueta stated that he knew five of the individuals who placed bets on him.
West Ham United, who were involved in a scuppered £80m ($92m) transfer of Paqueta to Manchester City, will not pursue legal action against the English Football Association over the matter.
The FA does not intend to appeal the decision, which was reached by an independent commission in July. The commission released its full decision on the case on Wednesday.
