Football's traditional opening routines include the onset of cramps

In the world of high school football, cramping is a common issue that coaches and players alike are seeking to address. Eric Sondheimer, a high school football player, is accepting news submissions for a daily look at positive happenings in high school sports, including this pressing matter.

Cramping can occur due to various reasons such as lactic acid buildup, anxiety, or excitement. To combat this, preparation and hydration strategies are being sought. Tim Moscicki, the Head Athletic Trainer and Director of Student Health at Loyola High School, advises players to prepare for games with hydration two or three days in advance. This proactive approach is aimed at preventing cramping during the first game of the season, a time when it is most prevalent.

Moscicki, who began his work at Loyola High School approximately 28 years ago, has seen his fair share of cramping cases. He suggests strategies like the use of supplements such as coconut water, bananas, pickle juice, mustard, and Gatorade, to help alleviate cramps.

St. John Bosco is using a supplement called Lytening Hydration, added to water, during its trip to Florida to help with cramping. The weather does not seem to be the only factor causing cramping, as it has been observed in both hot and cold weather, as well as in rain.
