'For good reason, it's called a classic': Labour Day offers another nail-biting conclusion as Roughriders and Bombers square off once more

The Saskatchewan Roughriders and Winnipeg Blue Bombers once again delivered a nail-biting Labour Day Classic, with the final score reading 34-30 in favour of the home team. This marks the Roughriders' 39th victory in the Labour Day game and their 16th win in the last 20 meetings between these two CFL powerhouses.

The game started as a defensive battle, mirroring the history of close games in this rivalry. It was not until the second quarter that Brett Lauther, the Riders' kicker, scored the first points of the match with a field goal from 34 yards. However, Lauther missed one extra-point attempt in the third quarter.

Quarterback Trevor Harris led the Roughriders' offensive charge, going 17/27 for 219 yards passing and one touchdown. Harris also showed his versatility by punting the ball on third down during the game. Rider running back Mario Anderson scored his first CFL touchdown in the third quarter, while Harris orchestrated a five-play, 102-yard touchdown drive later in the game.

For Winnipeg, Zach Collaros had a solid outing, completing 26/37 passes for 326 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. The touchdown was a spectacular 69-yard catch and run by Tommy Neild. The Bombers struggled defensively, with Malik Carney of the Roughriders strip-sacking Collaros, leading to a touchdown for A.J. Ouellette.

The Roughriders appeared to have forced a two-point safety, but a CFL Command Centre review overturned the call, resulting in a single point. Tevaughn Campbell of the Roughriders sealed the win with an interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The Roughriders moved to 9-2 on the season with the win, maintaining the best record in the Canadian Football League (CFL). The Bombers, on the other hand, fell to 6-5 after the loss, placing them third in the West division. The two teams are set to face off against each other in six days in Winnipeg for the Banjo Bowl.

The Roughriders also set a new Mosaic Stadium attendance record, with 34,243 fans cheering them on to victory. This win also marked the Roughriders' third Labour Day Classic victory in a row and their fourth in the last five games against the Blue Bombers. The 2025 Banjo Bowl was also won by the Roughriders, who have now achieved 15 wins against the Blue Bombers in this historic rivalry.
