Forecast for August 20 in Spain: Expect a decrease in temperatures overall

The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued weather alerts for several regions in the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, as a complex weather pattern unfolds over the coming days.

In the western half of the Iberian Peninsula, maximum temperatures will rise significantly in the west, decrease in the southeastern interior, and remain unchanged or slightly decrease elsewhere, except for some points along the northern Mediterranean coast. Areas along the Guadalquivir are expected to exceed 35 degrees.

Meanwhile, the eastern regions will experience cooler temperatures, with minimum temperatures decreasing in the northeastern quadrant and the eastern Iberian Peninsula, while increasing in the southwest and the Cantabrian Mountains. The Canary Islands, Mediterranean area, and areas along the Guadalquivir will not drop below 20 degrees.

On Thursday, Central Europe will be influenced by an Atlantic circulation characterized by a west to southwest airflow, bringing mild but intermittently moist air. This will result in variable weather conditions with above-average temperatures and a tendency toward wetter conditions, especially in central and northern areas, due to a persistent North Atlantic low-pressure zone extending over the continent.

In the Peninsula and Balearic Islands, winds will generally be light, more intense along coasts, with a prevailing northerly component, variable in the Mediterranean area, with some strong northerly intervals in the Ebro Delta, Ampurdán, and Balearic Islands. The Canary Islands will experience moderate trade winds with strong and/or very strong gusts.

Aragon will be yellow due to showers during the early morning, and the Valencian Community will have a yellow alert two hours earlier. Navarre and the Basque Country will have a yellow alert from 4 PM, and Andalusia will have a yellow alert due to high temperatures from 1 PM until 9 PM.

Scattered evolution clouds will develop in the northern half, eastern third, central zone, and the Balearic Islands in the afternoon, with possible showers in mountainous areas and their surroundings. In Catalonia, an orange alert for rain and storms will be in effect from midnight until 5 AM, decreasing to yellow level throughout the day, except from 8 AM to midday.

In the northern peninsula, cloudy skies are expected in the extreme north, with light rain in the eastern Cantabrian region. It is not ruled out that there will be low clouds in the northern coast of Alboran with fog banks on the coast at the end of the day. Also, during the early morning, remnants of the previous day's convection are expected in the eastern part of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, with possible showers and storms that may be locally strong.

In the Canary Islands, intervals of cloudy skies are expected in the north, and evolution clouds with some weak showers in the islands of greater relief. The islands will also experience moderate trade winds with strong and/or very strong gusts.

In the northern half and in the Balearic Islands, cloud development is expected in the afternoon with possible showers and storms in mountainous areas and their surroundings. These can be locally strong with hail in the Pyrenees, northeastern Catalonia, eastern Cantabria, and they are not ruled out in the interior of the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands.

It is not ruled out that there will be low clouds in the northern coast of Alboran with fog banks on the coast at the end of the day. The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) will continue to monitor the situation closely and issue updates as necessary.
