Foreign Ministry worker arrested for allegedly committing acts of high-level betrayal (treason) in Armenia

An Armenian Foreign Ministry employee, Ashkhen Aleksanyan, has been detained on charges of state treason and espionage. The arrest took place on September 14, 2025, according to reports from various Armenian media outlets.

The authorities confirmed the arrest, though they did not name the detainee initially. However, it was later revealed that the individual in question was Aleksanyan. The National Security Service (NSS) conducted a full-day search at the Foreign Ministry following her arrest.

Documents were found on Aleksanyan, and she was suspected of spying for Azerbaijan. Extremely important documents were reportedly found on her, which could potentially pose a significant threat to Armenia's national security.

According to the Armenian Investigative Committee, the case was launched on 20 June, entailing charges of espionage and treason. During the interrogation, Aleksanyan reportedly admitted to taking money from the Azerbaijani side and not acting alone.

Reports suggest that Aleksanyan was potentially blackmailed with intimate footage featuring herself. However, the authorities have not confirmed these reports. The authorities also refuted the reports that other Armenian Foreign Ministry employees were involved in the case, stating that no data was obtained in this regard during the preliminary investigation.

Aleksanyan reportedly worked in key departments of the Armenian Foreign Ministry and had access to important information. If found guilty, she could face up to life imprisonment.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the arrest of Aleksanyan took place on her departure to Vienna, not on her arrival. Some media outlets also claimed that she served as the Armenian consul in Austria. However, the authorities refuted these claims, stating that Aleksanyan did not hold a high-ranking position or serve as a consul.

Several Armenian media outlets cited their anonymous sources, and in some cases, dismissed each other's information. For instance, while some reports suggested that the arrest took place nearly two months ago, others stated that the first reports of the case appeared on 29 August.

The case has caused a stir in Armenia, with many questioning the extent of the espionage and the motives behind it. The authorities have promised to release more information as the investigation progresses. The public is closely watching the developments in this case, hoping for a swift resolution and restoration of national security.
