Two countries in Europe are currently battling a series of devastating forest fires. In Portugal, one fire in Arganil remains active, while in Spain, 16 active fires continue to pose a threat.

According to reports, around 1,400 firefighters are still deployed in Portugal to combat the fires. Unfortunately, one firefighter lost his life on Saturday due to severe burns sustained during a forest fire near Sabugal. The firefighter had burns covering 75 percent of his body.

Despite the ongoing struggles in Portugal, the situation in Spain is developing positively, according to the General Director of Civil Protection, Virginia Barcones. However, she called for a "final push" as the country continues to grapple with the fires.

To help combat the fires, 67 firefighters from Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia have been deployed in Spain since Tuesday. The fire department unit from Bonn, consisting of 67 personnel from Nordrhein-Westfalen, Niedersachsen, and other cities, was deployed to the Extremadura region to tackle an active forest fire.

The fires in Portugal have wreaked havoc on the country, with an area of almost 2,800 square kilometers affected. In Spain, provisional estimates by the European Forest Fire Information System EFFIS indicate that more than 4,000 square kilometers of nature have been destroyed since the beginning of the year. This destroyed area in Spain is more than ever measured in a whole year. For comparison, the burned area is much larger than the Saarland (around 2,570 square kilometers).

Eight people have lost their lives in forest fires in Portugal and Spain in August. The destruction caused by these fires is a stark reminder of the importance of fire safety and the need for continued efforts to combat these devastating events.

As the fires continue to rage on, the international community is rallying together to provide support and assistance in the fight against these natural disasters. The efforts of firefighters in Portugal and Spain are truly commendable, and we hope for a swift resolution to these fires and a return to normalcy for the affected communities.
