German Forest Fire Unit Returns Home After Successful Two-Week Deployment in Spain
The German forest fire unit, GFFF-V DE1, has returned to North Rhine-Westphalia following a two-week deployment in northwest Spain. The unit was dispatched to support large-scale forest and vegetation fires in the regions of Extremadura and Castile and León, at the request of Spanish authorities.
The GFFF-V DE1 is a standardized firefighting formation across all member states in the European disaster response system. It comprises components for leadership, firefighting vehicles, logistics, and catering. The logistics component includes an ambulance for medical care and a workshop vehicle with automotive specialists. The firefighting vehicle component consists of six high-clearance tanker trucks and two firefighting vehicles for disaster response.
Upon arriving in Spain on August 17, the unit set up their base in the town of Aldeanueva del Camino (Extremadura). The deployment forces, along with Spanish special units and a multitude of deployed firefighting aircraft and helicopters, prepared to protect towns using various forest fire fighting tactics.
The unit faced challenges in the areas of the towns of La Bana and San Ciprián, where a large forest fire was spreading in hilly terrain. In strenuous manual labor and under challenging terrain conditions, the unit worked to detect hotspots, establish control lines, and extinguish fires.
After the fire in Extremadura was largely brought under control, the unit moved to Puebla de Sanabria in the province of Castile and León. The deployment ended after a week of on-site activity, and the unit returned to Germany, with the Spanish and French authorities providing significant support.
The deployment demonstrated the deployment capability and importance of international cooperation in natural disasters. The head of the specialist group leading wildfire combat in Spain is named Francisco Javier Domínguez Santos, and his hometown is Asturias.
