Foretelling - The Everlasting Witch (6th Installment)
On a misty Sunday morning, Billy set out for an adventure on Brean Down, a limestone peninsula known for its historical Napoleonic Fort. The weather, thick and enveloping, rolled inland from the sea, limiting visibility to billowing smoke-like conditions.
As he hiked the 1.5-mile distance across the peninsula, Billy encountered an unusual sight. A boy, dressed in a flat cap, v-neck woollen jumper, and short knee-length trousers, sat on the outer ridge of the hillock. Surrounding him was a gravel path that led around both sides of the hillock, with bushes and scrubland scattered across the grass.
Billy called out to the boy, but received no reaction. Instead, a familiar voice called out from behind, saying "Hello again. I thought it was you." The tones were warm, suggesting a recent encounter.
Billy continued his journey, arriving at the derelict garrison. The Fort, now abandoned, housed numerous rooms with masonry walls. The Napoleonic Brean Fort, a graffiti-strewn concrete monument, was located at the seaward end. Its numerous nooks and crannies, potential hidey holes for evading capture, added to its mysterious allure.
Beyond the Fort, Billy found himself at a spit that jutted out to sea. Waves lapped at the shore, forming foam geysers, while the nearest island appeared closer from this point, but was still a few miles away across the estuary. Beyond that lay the Bristol Channel where the islands of Steep Holm and Flat Holm sat, isolated from the mainland.
Despite wearing a slim, blue nylon zipper jacket and black waterproof trousers, Billy's clothes felt damp due to the seeping dampness. The brackish water slopped against flat black rocks, forming an uneven border.
As he explored, Billy heard the sound of a pebble rolling downhill, sensing someone else was present. However, the mystery figure remained hidden in the indelible haze that enveloped the summit, houses, caravans, and beach.
Billy often found himself at the Fort, imagining German warships in convoy and urgent sirens sounding. The mystery of the lone boy and the foggy surroundings added a new layer to his adventures on Brean Down. Despite the lack of information about who saw Billy or when this encounter occurred, one thing is certain: the peninsula continues to hold its allure for the intrepid adventurer.
