Former SDP Ondo State Governorship Contender, Akingboye Passes Away in Lagos
In a sad turn of events, Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in the November 16, 2024, Ondo State governorship election, has passed away. According to a statement issued in Akure, Akingboye died in the early hours of Wednesday at his residence in Victoria Garden City (VGC), Lagos.
Akingboye, a renowned businessman, was the Chief Executive Officer of Benshore Maritime and Clog Oil Systems. Prior to this, the details of his predecessor as CEO of Benshore Maritime and Clog Oil Systems were not publicly disclosed. He was also the President of WeAfrica Group.
In addition to his business ventures, Akingboye was a prominent figure in the political landscape of Nigeria. He held the traditional title of Olowomeye I of Ikaleland and was a community builder, known for his philanthropic efforts.
Akingboye's spokesman, Oyeniyi Iwakun, issued a statement to journalists in Akure, describing the late politician as a man of unwavering integrity. Iwakun stated, "Otunba Bamidele Akingboye was a visionary leader, a man of integrity, and a philanthropist. His contributions to our community and our nation will be felt for years to come."
Akingboye is survived by his wives, children, grandchildren, and siblings. Burial arrangements for the late businessman and politician will be announced in due course.
In the 2024 Ondo State governorship election, Akingboye contested against Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and 12 other candidates.
Akingboye's passing is a significant loss to the business world and the political sphere in Nigeria. His legacy will undoubtedly live on as an example of leadership, integrity, and community service.
