Forming a Squad to Confront the 'Multi-Crisis'

The world is facing a multitude of interconnected challenges, often referred to as a polycrisis. One of the groups at the forefront of finding solutions to these problems is the Island of Knowledge, a new think tank founded by Dartmouth physicist Marcelo Gleiser in Italy.

The Island of Knowledge brings together small groups of scientists, philosophers, artists, and activists to discuss and envision solutions to global challenges such as the climate crisis, loss of biodiversity, global inequality, and rising rates of depression. Astrophysicist Adam Frank compared the mission of the Island of Knowledge to assembling a team like the Avengers.

The most recent topic discussed at the Island of Knowledge was human flourishing. Neuroscientist Richie Davidson spoke about the new science of happiness, believing that just a few minutes of mindfulness practice every day could make entire cities healthier and happier.

Efforts to address these global issues are happening across the globe, not just at the Island of Knowledge. Small groups worldwide are rediscovering old systems of knowledge in an attempt to create a more livable world. They are experimenting with new models of communities and exploring breakthrough technologies.

Anne and I have attended three gatherings near Siena, recording talks and interviews with diverse participants. The search results do not provide specific names or founders of other small groups worldwide that pursue ideas similar to the Island of Knowledge and work to change the world. However, it is clear that these groups' efforts are diverse, covering a wide range of approaches and strategies.

The success of these groups is crucial for addressing the global challenges mentioned. The hope is that these groups, including the Island of Knowledge, will be successful in their endeavors. The overall goal is to create a more sustainable and equitable world.

These groups are not limited to scientists, philosophers, artists, and activists; they may include individuals from various backgrounds. The main focus of the Island of Knowledge is to find solutions to these interconnected problems. The Island of Knowledge meetings aim to shift thinking towards a new conceptual framework or scientific paradigm.

In conclusion, the polycrisis facing the world requires collective action and innovative thinking. The Island of Knowledge and other similar groups are leading the way in finding solutions to these complex challenges. The success of these groups is essential for a sustainable and equitable future.
