Formula One Qualifying sees Aston Martin and Stroll collide; Alonso expresses hope for the race
In the lead-up to the 2025 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, Fernando Alonso proved his formidable speed, outpacing Oscar Piastri in the second practice session. However, a series of setbacks for Lance Stroll left him starting from the back of the grid.
Stroll's misfortune began during the qualifying session when a crash off the track resulted in a poor performance. Approaching Turn 13, Stroll lost control, spinning over an elevated gravel bed and damaging half of his front wing. Aston Martin's mechanics worked tirelessly overnight, using one of the two allowed breaches of the F1 night ban to repair the car in time for the race.
The weather forecast for the Dutch Grand Prix suggests it will remain dry, but conditions at the North Sea coast can change quickly. Starting from the back on the over-taking challenging Circuit Zandvoort significantly reduces Stroll's chances of success.
Meanwhile, Alonso found himself in a challenging position due to issues in the first three corners. Despite this, he showed impressive speed in the second and third sectors, even outperforming Piastri in FP2. However, a gust of wind around Turn 10 during qualifying cost him a few tenths, resulting in a midfield start.
Alonso remains optimistic, stating that the team's goal is to be in Q3 every Saturday and score points on Sunday. On the other hand, Piastri secured pole position, with Lando Norris being the favourite.
In the first practice, the two Aston Martins were the strongest force behind the McLaren duo. Despite a poor performance in qualifying compared to FP2, Alonso's car performed well, indicating potential for a strong race performance.
Stroll expressed his dissatisfaction after his poor performance, describing it as "very frustrating" and "shit". This is Stroll's 82nd Q1 exit in his career, a statistic that underscores the challenges he faced in Zandvoort.
Aston Martin has prepared for a possible two-stop race on Sunday, setting aside two hard tires and a medium tire. The team will be hoping for a strong recovery from Stroll, while Alonso aims to capitalise on his speed and convert it into a points-scoring finish.
