News Article: Digital Literacy Emphasized on International Literacy Day 2025 in Bangladesh

On the occasion of International Literacy Day 2025, the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh has emphasized the importance of digital literacy and the need for it to be made accessible to everyone, especially women, children, marginalized communities, and people with special needs. The day was observed on September 8, with the Bureau of Non-Formal Education under the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education responsible for organising the event.

Dr. Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, expressed his happiness and lauded the theme of "Promoting Literacy in a Digital Era" for International Literacy Day 2025. He highlighted the significance of literacy in the modern technology-dependent world, stating that it now includes digital knowledge, information usage skills, and the ability to participate in technology-based education.

In his statement, Dr. Yunus also emphasized the importance of work-oriented and skill-based education in the current competitive world. He stressed that those who are lagging behind in the use of information technology are not only deprived of education but are also being cut off from the mainstream of society and economy.

The interim government of Bangladesh, aiming to rebuild the country in a new way following the July mass uprising, has also shown support for the digital literacy initiative. The CA suggested that digital training for teachers, necessary technology in the hands of students, and a change in the attitude of parents are necessary to achieve the goal of a knowledge-based, inclusive, and humane society through the combined power of technology and literacy.

Professor Muhammad Yunus, in his call to action, urged collective efforts to build such a society. He emphasized that literacy is essential for the development and progress of a nation. Now, finding information, analyzing it, learning online, and finding solutions to everyday problems are all considered part of effective literacy.

On this International Literacy Day 2025, Dr. Yunus expressed his wish for the overall success of all the programs undertaken in celebration of the day. He hoped that the day would mark a significant step towards achieving a knowledge-based, inclusive, and humane society in Bangladesh.
