Four individuals detained due to their involvement in the theft of eight metric tonnes of copper from fuel stations and commercial establishments in Madrid and Oviedo.
In a significant development, the National Police have apprehended four individuals accused of stealing eight tons of copper wiring in a series of robberies across several towns in Madrid.
The investigation, which began in June due to a significant increase in copper wire thefts, led the authorities to a scrapyard in the Madrid municipality of San Fernando de Henares. It is at this location where the stolen material was sold.
Using a modus operandi that involved forcing open manholes, cutting the cable, and leaving the scene to check if the alarm system was activated, the suspects are suspected of committing seven robberies in the towns of Fuenlabrada, San Agustín de Guadalix, and Oviedo. These robberies left the businesses without electrical supply, causing an economic loss of over 70,000 euros.
Three of the arrested individuals are suspected of committing a crime of robbery with force and damage. The responsible person for the scrapyard in San Fernando de Henares, Juan Carlos M., was also arrested for selling stolen copper wire. Another arrested individual is responsible for a scrapyard where the stolen material was bought and sold.
The scrapyard where the suspects sold the stolen material was currently sanctioned and could not carry out any activities. Remarkably, the scrapyard did not have a sales register book.
The value of the eight tons of copper wiring found in the scrapyard is over 20,000 euros. This amount, added to the previously mentioned economic loss, brings the total to over 90,000 euros.
The suspects returned dressed as workers and pulled out the wiring for extraction. The arrests were made on July 30. The National Police continue to investigate this case to ensure all those involved are brought to justice.
