Freiburg is being denied an opportunity by Cologne
In a thrilling match at the sold-out Cologne stadium, 1.FC Köln clinched their second Bundesliga victory of the season, defeating SC Freiburg 4-1. The win marked Köln's first Bundesliga home game victory in 477 days.
The match started off quietly, with the crowd's spirits dampened by the announcement of FC Bayern Munich as Köln's second-round cup opponent. However, the silence was soon broken as the game unfolded.
Köln took the lead early in the first half, with Jakub Kaminski scoring his first FC goal for the club. Marius Bülter, who was instrumental in the attack, provided the assist. The goal marked Köln's first goal of the Bundesliga season against Freiburg.
Freiburg responded with a consolation goal from Maximilian Eggestein, but Köln was not to be outdone. Marius Bülter once again played a pivotal role, setting up Jan Thielmann for Köln's second goal. The crowd erupted in cheers, chanting "Der FC ist wieder da" (The FC is back) in celebration.
The momentum shifted in Köln's favour, with Said El Mala, who made his Bundesliga debut this season, scoring his first Bundesliga goal to extend Köln's lead. The match ended with a fourth goal for Köln, scored by substitute Said El Mala.
Freiburg remains winless in the Bundesliga, while Köln climbs to third place in the league standings. The match was played with debutant Rav van den Berg and Denis Huseinbasic starting for Köln.
This victory marks Köln's first two Bundesliga wins in the first two matchdays in 20 years, a significant milestone for the club. The team's impressive performance bodes well for the rest of the season, as they continue to challenge for a spot at the top of the table.
