Frequent delays marked the arrivals of long-distance trains at Hamburg's primary train station.

In Hamburg, the reliability of long-distance trains has become a growing concern, with Member of Parliament Oezdemir describing Deutsche Bahn as a "repair case" due to the current state of long-distance traffic in the city.

Last year, nationwide punctuality in long-distance traffic stood at 62.5%, a figure roughly similar to that at Hamburg's main station. The decline in the number of stops at Hamburg's main train station from 2021 to 2023 is linked to ongoing major construction and renovation on the Hamburg–Berlin railway line. This work led to replacement services such as extensive bus routes, temporarily replacing some regional train connections and reducing train stoppages at Hamburg Hauptbahnhof during this period.

The average delay of long-distance trains at Hamburg's main station has increased continuously over the past four years, from 7 to 11.4 minutes. The punctuality of trains arriving at the station has fallen from 75% to 62% in the same period. Deutsche Bahn considers a stop to be late if a train is at least six minutes delayed.

Oezdemir, the Member of Parliament, has linked the punctuality problem at Hamburg's main station to long-term austerity policies. He believes that these policies are showing their dramatic effects and that more investments in Deutsche Bahn and affordable tickets are necessary.

The spokesperson for Deutsche Bahn attributed the increasing delays to the rail network being too full, old, and prone to faults. They also highlighted that disruptions on individual routes can immediately and like a domino effect, spread to the entire network in the closely meshed, timed system.

In light of these issues, Oezdemir has stated that long-distance traffic is no longer a reliable means of transportation for people in Hamburg. He suggests that the situation calls for immediate action and improvements to ensure a smoother and more punctual service for commuters.
