Friend defrauded by investigations in Dubai, ordered to pay back Dh37,760 to conned sick companion

In a recent court ruling in Dubai, a friend has been ordered to repay over Dh37,000 to a local woman, Huda Ata, following a civil suit filed by her siblings.

The dispute arose when the friend, who was supposed to help the woman financially, misappropriated funds intended for her. The friend claimed that a surgery cost Dh36,000, with Dh12,000 covered by insurance and the remaining Dh24,000 to be paid upfront. However, the court-appointed financial expert confirmed a Dh32,760 transfer from the patient's brother to the friend, suggesting that the friend had received more money than claimed.

The siblings submitted insurance confirmations, hospital records, and communications as evidence, but the friend denied wrongdoing, claiming to have paid the insurer directly and insisting proof was on a "lost" phone. The court, however, did not find this explanation satisfactory, especially given the friend's failure to appear in court or provide documentation.

The court ruled that only the brother's claim was proven, and the friend was ordered to repay Dh32,760 plus Dh5,000 in damages. The friend was also ordered to cover court fees and legal costs, typically borne by the losing party in a lawsuit.

The woman's brother, living abroad, transferred the funds intending it as further help for his sister. The friend's actions caused significant financial and emotional distress, with the woman later finding out that the surgery had been fully covered by the insurance, making the friend's story false.

No proof of the alleged additional loans was found, and the outcome of the civil suit now includes a repayment order for Dh37,760 (Dh32,760 + Dh5,000). This case serves as a reminder of the importance of honesty and financial responsibility in our relationships.

The woman, Huda Ata, is from Dubai, and this incident highlights the potential risks of trusting others with our finances, especially in times of need. It's essential to ensure that all transactions are transparent and documented to avoid such unfortunate incidents.
