Front-runners in Childhood Bladder and Genital System Health Care

In the heart of Upstate New York, a renowned practice is making significant strides in the field of paediatric urology. Led by experts like Jimena Cubillos, M.D., and Ronald Rabinowitz, M.D., the practice is at the forefront of minimally invasive, laparoscopic, and robotic pediatric urologic surgery.

Dr. Cubillos, an accomplished specialist in her field, completed her training at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and a two-year fellowship in pediatric urology at Long Island Jewish/Schneider Children's Hospital. Her expertise has attracted numerous referrals from surrounding areas such as Buffalo, Syracuse, Watertown, Ithaca, and northern Pennsylvania.

Ronald Rabinowitz, the chair of the Department of Urology at the University of Rochester Medical Center, has a rich history in the field. Growing up near Pittsburgh's steel mills, Rabinowitz suffered from severe asthma, leading him to spend time in children's hospitals and eventually decide to become a doctor. His career had a strong connection to David Williams, who trained many first-generation, North American pediatric urologists.

A tennis match brought Rabinowitz to Rochester 45 years ago, where he was recruited to handle pediatric urology at the medical center. Since then, he has trained over a hundred urology residents and medical students and authored or co-authored more than 200 scientific articles and textbook chapters.

In 1975, Rabinowitz accepted a clinical fellowship in pediatric urology at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, where he also accepted a fellowship in pediatric urology research. This decision led to the publication of 15 clinical research papers.

The Department of Urology at the University of Rochester Medical Center focuses on providing the best possible urological care for children as part of its overall mission. The urologists at the practice treat children exclusively and provide comprehensive care for a broad spectrum of urologic diseases.

The practice offers a wide range of treatments, including neurogenic bladder, voiding dysfunction, vesicoureteral reflux, prenatal hydronephrosis, testicular torsion, varicoceles, hypospadias, meatal stenosis, penile deformities, kidney stones, kidney abnormalities, urinary tract infections, and pediatric urologic cancer.

With robotic surgery, the practice can treat kidney blockage by accessing kidneys through the belly, resulting in faster recovery times due to small incisions. The practice has also expanded in-office circumcisions for infants from newborns to age 5 or 6 months, eliminating the need for general anaesthesia.

Moreover, the practice utilizes video urodynamics to examine how a child's bladder functions and offers videogame-like biofeedback therapy to teach children how to relax pelvic muscles for more effective voiding.

Experts in the practice work closely with physicians at the Wilmot Cancer Center, the area's most respected cancer center. Dr. Rabinowitz, who continues to educate the next generation of urologists, was recently awarded the AUA's Lifetime Achievement Award, demonstrating his passion for the history of urology.

The practice, under the leadership of Dr. Cubillos and Dr. Rabinowitz, is undeniably transforming the landscape of paediatric urology in Upstate New York.
