In a heartbreaking turn of events, last week saw horrific violence at Annunciation Church deeply affecting the St. Mary's parish. The peaceful sanctuary of Annunciation was shattered on August 27, when 21 people were injured during mass. Tragically, two young lives, Harper Moyski and Fletcher Merkel, were lost.

Amidst the grief, St. Mary's Orthodox Church stands united with Annunciation in shared sorrow, prayer, and fervent hope. Father Timothy Sas, the leader of St. Mary's, expressed his sympathies, stating, "God remains attentive, and God is present even in the midst of a tragedy."

The community spirit at St. Mary's has been evident this weekend, as they host the annual Taste of Greece festival. This cultural extravaganza, open on Sunday, September 7th, from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm, features traditional Greek food, drinks, dancing, and music.

The festival serves a dual purpose this year. Alongside celebrating Greek heritage, St. Mary's is fundraising during the event to support the Annunciation community. Around the festival grounds, QR codes share links to fundraisers for families still recovering from the Annunciation shooting.

One of the victims of the shooting was Sophia Forchas, a 12-year-old parishioner of St. Mary's Orthodox Church. Sophia, the daughter of a long-standing member, is currently critical but her condition is trending in the right direction according to Dr. Walt Galicich. The Forchas family, deeply ingrained in the St. Mary's church community for several generations, are receiving an outpouring of support during this difficult time.

Despite the tragedy, the spirit of community and resilience remains strong. Organizers hosted a blood drive on Friday for attendees of the Taste of Greece festival, demonstrating the compassion and unity of the St. Mary's and Annunciation communities.

As the Taste of Greece festival continues, the communities of St. Mary's and Annunciation come together, finding solace and strength in their shared faith and mutual support.
