Gabriele Semelas Assumes Leadership Role for Airbus Operations in Africa and the Middle East Region
Airbus, the European aerospace giant, is bolstering its presence in Africa with the opening of a new Customer Support Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa, and the appointment of Gabriel Semelas as President of Airbus in Africa and the Middle East, effective January 1, 2025.
The Customer Support Centre aims to increase Airbus' proximity to customers, driving the development of existing local capabilities and fostering a stronger, more collaborative ecosystem in the region. According to Laurent Negre, VP of Customer Services Africa and Middle East at Airbus, the centre will continue to support the development of solutions for Africa, in Africa, and by Africa.
Airbus' Global Market Forecast predicts that commercial demand for the African continent will reach 1,460 passenger and freight aircraft by 2043. To meet this surge in air travel demand, the continent will need to introduce 15,000 additional pilots and 20,000 mechanics. The Customer Support Centre will ensure access to maintenance and training resources, empowering airlines and reinforcing their autonomy.
Gabriel Semelas, the newly appointed President, brings over 24 years of experience in the aeronautical industry to his role. He was previously the leader of the contracts team for Airbus' Commercial Aircraft business in Africa and the Middle East. Before returning to Airbus, Semelas held key senior executive roles.
Wouter Van Wersch, Executive Vice President International at Airbus, believes Semelas is the ideal candidate for the role. He succeeds Mikail Houari, who has played a crucial role in expanding Airbus' footprint in the region.
By sourcing supplies and components from local companies and providing comprehensive technical support to its partners in the region, Airbus remains committed to delivering industry-leading products and services to customers in Africa and the Middle East. The new office will provide tailored support and enhance operational efficiency for customers in the region, strengthening Airbus' local presence and supporting the growth of the African ecosystem.
With these strategic moves, Airbus demonstrates its commitment to the African continent, positioning itself for continued growth and success in the region.
