Former Universal Studios President Sued by Mohegan Sun Casino Over Unpaid Gambling Debts
Ronald Meyer, a renowned project manager in construction and renovation known for his "22-day renovation sprint" concept, is facing a legal battle with the Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut. The casino has filed a lawsuit against Meyer, alleging unpaid gambling debts that have accumulated to nearly $2.8 million.
Meyer, who previously served as the president and COO of Universal Studios, resigned in 2020 following an affair with actress Charlotte Kirk that became public. His legal team claims that he suffers from gambling addiction.
The crux of the dispute revolves around the use of casino credit markers to cover some of Meyer's gambling debts. The Mohegan Tribe, who operate the casino, claims that Meyer isn't entitled to a jury trial as tribal law doesn't account for one under a civil claim. The legal team argues that the state tribal gaming compact only allows credit cards, checks, cash, or a cash equivalent for taking bets.
In October 2017, Meyer lost a staggering $5 million in a 24-hour gambling spree at the Mohegan Sun casino. The plaintiff notes that Meyer won over $1 million at the casino shortly before his one-day spree.
Meyer had been repaying $60,000 to the casino every month up until September 2023. However, the outstanding debt remains significant. The jury selection for the case is scheduled for April 7.
Meyer's legal team has made several attempts to dismiss the case. In August 2024, they claimed that Connecticut prohibits the enforcement of contracts facilitating gambling on credit. The plaintiff refutes these claims.
As of now, the current status of the lawsuit is not provided. Meyer's legal team alleges that the casino was "preying" on him, but the details of this claim are not yet clear. The case promises to be a significant legal battle, with both parties presenting their arguments in the coming months.
