Generous EIOH Alumnus Gifts $100,000 in Tribute to Beloved Parents

Dr. Murray Rosenthal, a distinguished alumnus of the Eastman Dental Center, has made a significant contribution to the institution by donating $100,000. This generous gift will facilitate renovations and technology updates, aiming to provide the very best training and care environment for residents and patients at the Eastman Institute for Oral Health (EIOH).

The funds will primarily be used for the expansion of the General Dentistry clinic space at EIOH. In recognition of Dr. Rosenthal's significant contributions, the expanded space will be named the Rosenthal Corridor.

Dr. Rosenthal's academic career was marked by a diverse educational journey. He attended the University of Toronto and the University of London, where he received his medical training and specialty education in clinical pharmacology. After completing his undergraduate prerequisite courses at the University of Buffalo, he enrolled in the AEGD programme at Eastman Dental Center in 1964, graduating as an alum.

Dr. Rosenthal's formative dental years were spent at Eastman Dental Center during the Bibby and Buonocore years, a period of significant growth and development for the institution. His background in pediatric dental care from Eastman was invaluable in creating a modern urban municipal dental program.

Throughout his career, Dr. Rosenthal developed several systems for assessing quality of care and administering dental clinics. His work, "Dr. Rosenthal's Toolkit," and a book he co-authored, A Comprehensive Quality Assurance System for Practicing Dentists, are widely used today.

In 1977, Dr. Rosenthal completed fellowships in community medicine and computer application in medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He also earned a certificate in periodontics from Columbia University in 1971.

Dr. Rosenthal's parents, Dr. G. George Rosenthal and Violet Ruth Bloom, also have a connection with Eastman Dental Center. Dr. Rosenthal's father completed his program at the Eastman Dental Center at the same time as Dr. Rosenthal's mother, who completed the Eastman Hygiene Program in 1935. Dr. Rosenthal's mother was also actively involved as an administrator with Eastman's SMILEmobiles.

Dr. Rosenthal's donation is a tribute to his parents who met at the Dental Dispensary in the 1930s. This generous gift will help future residents at EIOH and ensure that the institution continues to provide the highest quality of care and training.

In addition to his work at EIOH, Dr. Rosenthal spent the next decade serving as a dental director for three clinics. In 1987, he was appointed director of the Bureau of Dental Health Services in the NYC Department of Health. He also opened a part-time periodontal practice in Manhattan which continues today.

Throughout his career, Dr. Rosenthal worked to update clinics and started programs to reach underserved neighborhoods using portable dental units. His efforts have significantly impacted the dental community, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of dentists at EIOH.
