Georgetown dominates Davidson with Hart's three impressive touchdown runs, ending the game at 51-14.
In the opening game of the 2025 season, Davidson University's new head football coach, Saj Thakkar, faced his first test as he aimed to steer the team away from its traditional triple-option offense. The game, held against Georgetown University, unfortunately ended in a 51-14 loss for Davidson.
The game started on a high note for Davidson, with Savion Hart scoring a 69-yard touchdown on the third play of the game. Hart also added a 27-yard touchdown in the first quarter, showing promise for the new offensive strategy.
However, Georgetown quickly reclaimed the lead, with a series of impressive plays. Danny Lauter, Georgetown's quarterback, was 11 of 16 for another 135 yards during the game, including a 41-yard touchdown pass to Jimmy Kibble in the second quarter. Lauter also threw two touchdown passes in the game.
Coulter Cleland and Casey Bullock combined to go 19 of 31 for 190 yards for Davidson. Cleland also had a standout moment, throwing a 55-yard touchdown pass to Brody Reina. Despite these efforts, Davidson struggled to keep pace with Georgetown, who led 38-14 at the half.
Nicholas Dunneman added a 7-yard TD reception in the third quarter, but it was not enough to close the gap. Hart finished the game with 123 yards on eight carries and also had 78 yards on two receptions.
Despite the loss, Coach Thakkar's determination to modernise Davidson's football strategy was evident. The team will undoubtedly learn and grow from this first game, as they continue to adapt to their new coach's vision. The next challenge awaits, and with it, the opportunity to showcase the progress made under Coach Thakkar's guidance.
