Georgia Governor Kemp mobilizes 300 National Guard members to Washington D.C., providing assistance during a declared state of emergency related to crime
The Georgia National Guard is set to deploy 300 soldiers to Washington, D.C., following a federal request, as part of President Donald Trump's declared "crime emergency" in the capital. Governor Brian Kemp announced this decision, expressing a commitment to upholding public safety and gratitude towards the brave Guardsmen and women, their families, and their dedication to service.
This deployment is related to Trump's executive order on August 11, which expanded the National Guard's role in crime control. The executive order aims to support the local D.C. National Guard and federal law enforcement in restoring order in the capital.
The Georgia National Guard soldiers will relieve service members stationed in D.C. since the beginning of the activation. The Joint Task-Force District of Columbia (JTF-DC) currently consists of over 4,500 guardsmen from across the country, including units from West Virginia, South Carolina, and Ohio.
The Georgia National Guard's mission in Washington, D.C. is to assist in restoring public safety at the capital. The soldiers, serving as medical support to military personnel, have already been sent to Washington, D.C. earlier this week, with more deployments scheduled for mid-September.
The deployment of the Georgia National Guard does not affect their ability to respond to in-state needs. Governor Kemp expressed confidence in the Georgia National Guard's ability to fulfill both their mission in Washington, D.C. and their obligations to the people of Georgia.
Kemp stated that Georgia is standing with the Trump administration in its mission to ensure the security and beauty of the nation's capital. The FBI has reported more than 1,200 arrests under Trump's federal crime crackdown in DC, highlighting the need for additional support.
The Georgia National Guard will assist federal troops in the JTF-DC and local law enforcement to "restore public safety" at the capital. The D.C. National Guard did not provide a specific number of Georgia National Guard soldiers currently deployed in Washington, D.C. However, the deployment is a testament to the commitment of the Georgia National Guard to serving the nation in times of need.
