On June 3rd, 2023, the cities of Essen and Mülheim an der Ruhr will participate in the nationwide traffic safety campaign "sicher.mobil.leben". Now in its fifth year, this campaign has chosen "Children in Focus" as its theme for this year.

The traffic controls during the campaign will focus on critical areas near kindergartens, primary schools, and secondary schools, with a particular emphasis on speed, right of way, turning, distraction, and "parent taxis" near schools. The campaign is not limited to specific modes of transportation, including cars, motorcycles, e-scooters, bikes, and pedestrians.

The police in Essen and Mülheim an der Ruhr are actively involved in traffic education and addressing adult road users as part of the campaign. The traffic controls during the campaign will aim to ensure the safety of children in traffic, with measures and prevention actions being implemented in both cities.

The controls during the campaign will take place based on tips from citizens and officers of the district service. Mobile phone use as a distraction will also be addressed during the traffic controls. The motto of the campaign, "sicher.mobil.leben", emphasises the importance of safe, mobile, and liveable cities for all residents, with a special focus on the safety of children.

The campaign has been held annually since 2018 with changing themes, and this year's event in Essen and Mülheim an der Ruhr was organised by the Police Wuppertal. The campaign is nationwide in scope, with similar events taking place in cities across Germany to promote traffic safety and protect vulnerable road users, particularly children.
