Germany's upcoming match against Northern Ireland in Cologne on Sunday presents an intriguing question: who will take up the right-side defence position? The debate revolves around two players, Antonio Rüdiger and Joshua Kimmich.

Rüdiger, who has been a regular starter for the German national team, will start against Northern Ireland. However, the question remains about his partner. Rüdiger's performance in his debut match against Slovakia, nine years ago, was less than impressive, with him being at fault for both goals and looking lost on the pitch.

Joshua Kimmich, on the other hand, made his international debut against Slovakia and has since been a regular starter. Nagelsmann has mentioned the possibility of deploying Kimmich on the right side multiple times, and he was trusted by coach Joachim Löw as a right-back in the Euro tournament in France. In the recent World Cup qualifiers, Nagelsmann could deploy Kimmich on the right side in a pressing situation following a false start.

Nnamdi Collins, who had a less than ideal debut against Slovakia, was replaced in the starting lineup. However, Nagelsmann assured that he wouldn't blame the debutant and expressed sympathy for Collins, stating that he should not be blamed for his struggles, given he was making his debut. Collins himself walked silently to the team bus but received prominent support.

Maximilian Mittelstädt was shifted to the right side after halftime against Slovakia, and he was not entirely unprepared for the switch, having practiced it in training. Collins, too, has been practicing and could potentially be a contender for the right-side defence position.

In Bratislava, Kimmich made his 102nd international appearance, while Collins left the stadium looking frustrated after losing the U21 European Championship final against England. Nagelsmann commented that Collins did not have a great day in the match against Slovakia, with him criticizing the lack of support from the defense, particularly against Leo Sauer.

As the countdown to the match against Northern Ireland begins, the question of who will play on the right side of defense remains intriguing, involving both Collins and Kimmich. With both players bringing their unique strengths to the table, it will be interesting to see who Nagelsmann chooses to partner Rüdiger in the defense.
