In the heart of Lisbon, Portugal's capital, a devastating incident occurred on a historic funicular, known as the Elevador da Gloria. The cable car derailed, resulting in a tragic accident that has claimed at least 16 lives and left 21 individuals injured.

According to reports by SIC Notícias, union representative Manuel Leal had previously emphasised the urgent need for maintenance work on the funicular. The maintenance of the line, however, was outsourced to a private company, as confirmed by trade union representatives.

The identities of many of the deceased and injured are still pending, but it is known that two South Korean and one Swiss national have been positively identified among the fatalities. The fourth presumably deceased tourist is believed to be French, although their identity has not yet been confirmed.

Official reports suggest that several of the injuries were serious, and no confirmation has been made by the German Foreign Office regarding the possible death of a German citizen in the incident. Luís Neves, the head of the Portuguese Criminal Police, stated that a German citizen, two Canadians, one Ukrainian, and one American are believed to be among the deceased, based on information already gathered.

Lisbon's public transport company Carris has denied allegations of negligence in the maintenance of the funicular line. The company has yet to comment on the specifics of the accident.

This unfortunate incident marks the first such accident involving one of the three funiculars operated in Lisbon since the 19th century. The city's authorities are working tirelessly to investigate the cause of the accident and to provide support to the affected individuals and their families.

As more information becomes available, we will continue to update this report. Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragedy.
