German man who went missing discovered deceased in Lake Como
In a heart-wrenching incident, a 55-year-old man from Baden-Württemberg, Germany, lost his life in Lake Como last year. The man, a well-known restaurateur and organizer of after-work parties in Bühl, jumped into the water to save his children after they fell overboard from a rented boat near Dorio, a popular spot among German tourists on the eastern shore of the lake.
The incident occurred in a particularly challenging location, as Lake Como is one of the deepest lakes in Europe, with a maximum depth of over 400 meters. Unfortunately, the lake was very deep at the point where the incident occurred, complicating the search.
The children were brought to safety, but their father did not resurface. The search was further hindered by adverse weather conditions. Despite these challenges, rescue divers eventually found the man at a depth of more than 200 meters.
The news of the man's death has caused shock in Baden-Württemberg, the town where he was from. Mayor Hubert Schnurr described the incident as a "major shock" for the city and the region.
It is suspected that the man was caught in a current. The body of the man is now at the disposal of the judicial authorities for necessary examinations.
This tragic incident is reminiscent of another one that occurred in Lake Como in 2024, where a 51-year-old German man drowned while trying to help his son. The lake, located about 80 kilometers north of Milan, is notorious for generating strong waves due to changing winds, especially in its northern part.
The man who died had Italian roots, adding a poignant layer to the tragedy. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
