Germany advances to EuroBasket quarterfinals, fueled by late-game momentum and outstanding play from Franz Wagner.
In a thrilling display of resilience and teamwork, Germany's men's national basketball team defeated Portugal with a commanding 27-point margin, securing their place in the quarterfinals of EuroBasket 2025.
The final frame saw Germany tighten their defense significantly, allowing just 7 points to Portugal, a testament to their determination to clinch the victory.
Orlando Magic forward Franz Wagner played a central role in the victory, anchoring the frontcourt with a stellar performance. Wagner finished the game with 16 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 1 steal, and his perfect 8-for-8 performance at the free throw line contributed to his team-high efficiency rating of 21.
Sacramento Kings guard Dennis Schroder also put in a solid shift, scoring 16 points, adding 3 assists, 3 rebounds, and 1 steal to the team's tally.
Orlando Magic forward Tristan da Silva provided a spark off the bench, scoring 11 points on perfect shooting, going 4-for-4 from the field, including 3-for-3 from three-point range.
Germany's offense struggled in the first half due to missed shots and tight play, but they managed to turn things around in the final frame, outscoring Portugal 33-7 to secure the impressive victory.
Acknowledging the challenges of the Portugal matchup and the team's struggles in the first half, acting head coach Alan Ibrahimagic praised the team's resilience and determination. "We knew it was going to be a tough game, but the team showed great character in the final frame," he said.
With the win over Portugal, Germany will face the winner of Italy versus Slovenia in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. The team remains a favourite to make a deep run in the tournament, with Wagner leading the charge.
Coach Álex Mumbrú, who is currently the head coach but does not have a full-time contract in the NBA, was sidelined due to illness during the Portugal match. Ibrahimagic led the team in his absence, leading them to a 6-0 record at EuroBasket 2025.
