Germany Refuses to Endorse Military Intervention
In a significant development, European leaders held consultations to discuss the support for Ukraine, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy participating in the discussions. The US President with whom they discussed the results was Donald Trump.
Thirty-five heads of state and government from the "Coalition of the Willing" attended the consultations, with some participating in person in Paris and others joining via video call. Among the attendees was Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who advocated for a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The focus of the consultations was initially on financing, arming, and training the Ukrainian armed forces. Germany, currently Ukraine's most important partner, is ready to further expand aid. However, Germany has not yet committed to a potential military involvement in Ukraine. The Bundestag, Germany's federal parliament, holds the final say in a deployment of the German armed forces.
The European partners expressed their hope that the United States would continue to significantly contribute to the joint efforts to support Ukraine. They also emphasized the need for the US to formulate security guarantees. The European partners discussed the results of the consultations with US President Donald Trump in a phone call.
Germany will decide on military engagement "in due time" when conditions are clear, such as the nature and extent of US involvement and the outcome of the negotiation process. The European partners highlighted the importance of shaping a constructive diplomatic process, as explained by Kornelius.
If the Russian side continues to play for time, Europe will increase the sanctions pressure to boost the chances of a diplomatic solution. A significant point of discussion was the need for a ceasefire, with the summit serving as a potential platform to agree upon one.
In conclusion, the consultations marked a significant step towards strengthening the support for Ukraine from both the US and Europe. The discussions underscored the urgent need for a diplomatic solution to the ongoing crisis and the importance of continued cooperation between European partners and the US.
