Germany victories over Northern Ireland were enthusiastically marked by the retired Mats Hummels.
Germany Secures World Cup 2026 Qualification with a 3-1 Victory
Germany has cemented its position as a formidable force in the World Cup 2026 qualifiers, having won all of its matches so far. The team currently leads Group C, following a 3-1 victory over Northern Ireland.
The match, held at the RheinEnergieStadion, was a significant one for the German Football Association (DFB) as they took the opportunity to honour Mats Hummels, the world champion in 2014 with the Mannschaft. Despite his retirement this summer after his last season with AS Rome, Hummels was celebrated for his illustrious career.
A banner and a tifo representing his number 5 were displayed in one of the stands of the stadium during the tribute. DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and Director of Sport Rudi Völler presented a frame highlighting Hummels' achievements, while he was described as "masterful, combative, powerful, strong" during the ceremony.
Hummels, a 36-year-old former defender, played over 500 matches with Borussia Dortmund and made 78 appearances for the German national team between 2010 and 2023.
The team's top scorer in the World Cup 2026 qualifiers is Timo Werner with 3 goals. Germany has scored a total of 9 goals and conceded 2 goals in the qualifiers.
With the qualification secured, Germany's next challenge comes in the form of Italy, scheduled for March 2025. Despite Mats Hummels' retirement, the team will undoubtedly bring the same determination and skill that has led them to this point.
