Germany's Deutschlandfunk music forum marks its 25th anniversary
The New Music Forum, a cherished tradition that began as a concert weekend at the Deutschlandfunk broadcasting house in the spring of 2000, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The event, themed "By the Sea of Peace," takes place over two concert evenings on September 27th and October 4th in Cologne.
The festivities kick off on September 27th with an "Enthralling" concert by the Asasello Quartet, featuring works by Viera Janáčková, Jamilia Jazylbekova (World Premiere), and Dmitri Shostakovich. The evening will also mark the World Premiere of several works, including those by Zygmunt Krauze, Olga Neuwirth, Monika Szpyrka, Krzysztof Penderecki, Juan Allende-Blin, and Eres Holz. The E-MEX Ensemble & Społdzielnia Muzyczna Contemporary Ensemble will perform during the Musical-Literary Evening, which will be conducted by Christoph Maria Wagner. Renatus Mészár, Baritone, will also take the stage, while Olaf Reitz will read from "Dojczland" by Andrzej Stasiuk.
The October 4th program includes a Musical-Literary Evening titled "Listen and Think." The New Music Forum 2025 also offers a German-Polish ensemble cooperation and thematically cooperates with the "Provinzlaerm" festival in Eckernförde.
Deutschlandfunk has commissioned compositions by Jamilia Jazylbekova and Gerald Eckert for the New Music Forum 2025. The composer represented with a world premiere at the New Music Forum 2025 in Cologne on September 27, 2025, is not explicitly named in the available search results.
For those unable to attend in person, the New Music Forum 2025 will also be available online. A direct link to the event can be found here. More information about the New Music Forum radio broadcast can be found on the same website.
The New Music Forum 2025 program can be found in the Document "New Music Forum 2025 Program Flyer.pdf." The event concludes with a festival jubilee reception scheduled for 7:30 PM on September 27th.
From November 8th to 29th, 2025, the New Music Forum "By the Sea of Peace" will be broadcast as a seven-part radio festival on Deutschlandfunk. Since 2002, the Forum has been curated by Frank Kämper and has developed into a discursive event format. To date, around 170 new works have been premiered on Deutschlandfunk, 88 of which were commissioned by Deutschlandfunk.
