Giants Secure Win Over Rockies in Teng's Return, Final Score: 8-3
Taiwanese Pitcher Teng Kai-wei Secures Second MLB Win
In a thrilling game in Denver, Colorado, Taiwanese starting pitcher Teng Kai-wei secured his second career win in the Major Leagues on Monday. The San Francisco Giants emerged victorious, defeating the Colorado Rockies 8-3, bringing their record to 69-69 as they continue their push for a wild-card berth.
Teng's outing was a strong one, allowing just two runs and nine hits during his 5-1/3 innings of play. He showed improved command, not issuing a walk for the first time this season, after having surrendered 17 free passes in his previous appearances.
The game began with a bang, as Rafael Devers hit a solo home run in the first inning, his 29th of the year. The scoring continued in the third, when Drew Gilbert went 4-for-4 and hit a two-run homer to extend the Giants' lead. Willy Adames added a two-run shot in the seventh inning.
Teng, however, was not without his challenges. He allowed hits in every inning except the first, and both runners who scored in the sixth inning were charged to him. Yet, Teng worked his way out of trouble with timely strikeouts, demonstrating sharper command than in his previous four outings this season.
Six of Teng's eight strikeouts came in the second and third innings, where he fanned two consecutive batters with two runners on base and one out to escape the jam. This is a new career high for the number of strikeouts Teng has made in a single game.
The victory marks a significant milestone for Teng, who is the first Taiwanese starting pitcher to win a game in the MLB in seven years. Chen Wei-yin was the last Taiwanese starting pitcher to win a game in the MLB, which he did in 2018. The name of the Taiwanese pitcher who last recorded a win as a starting pitcher in the MLB within the past seven years is Chien-Ming Wang.
Joel Peguero replaced Teng in the bottom of the sixth inning with one out, runners on second and third, and the Giants leading 6-0. The game ended with a score of 8-3 in favor of the San Francisco Giants.
With this win, Teng improves his record to 2-3 with a 7.23 ERA. His performance against the Colorado Rockies will undoubtedly boost his confidence as he continues his journey in the Major Leagues.
