Freshworks Co-Founder Girish Mathrubootham Steps Down as Executive Chairman

In a significant development, Girish Mathrubootham, the co-founder of the Nasdaq-listed software firm Freshworks, has announced his resignation as executive chairman, effective December 1, 2025. The news was reported by the Entrackr media platform.

Mathrubootham will be succeeded by Roxanne Austin, the current lead independent director, who will assume the role of chairperson of the Freshworks board. This reshuffle is expected to reduce the board to nine members, with only two directors continuing in the Class III category.

The announcement comes four years after Mathrubootham led Freshworks to its listing on the US Nasdaq exchange. Since then, the company has made significant strides in its growth and operations.

Recently, Freshworks' artificial intelligence-powered Freddy suite surpassed USD 20 million in annual recurring revenue. The company's operating revenue for the quarter ending June 2025 grew to USD 204.7 million, compared with USD 174 million in the same period last year. Losses from operations narrowed significantly to USD 9 million, down from USD 44 million a year earlier, reflecting tighter cost management.

Mathrubootham's departure from Freshworks is not connected to any operational or governance differences. Instead, he will now dedicate his time to Together Fund, a venture capital firm he co-founded.

Together Fund, which focuses on backing software-as-a-service startups, announced its second fund in 2023 with a target of USD 150 million. Reports suggest that the fund aims to close by mid-2025.

As of the latest disclosures, Mathrubootham owns a 4.28 percent stake in Freshworks after partial share sales in late 2024. The announcement does not specify a successor for Mathrubootham's position at Freshworks.

Mathrubootham transitioned from CEO to executive chairman in May 2024. The new chairperson, Roxanne Austin, was appointed to succeed him upon his resignation.
