"Giroud scores the decisive goal in the final moments to propel Lille over Monaco"
In a thrilling encounter between Rennes and Marseille, the hosts managed to secure a 1-0 victory despite playing a man short for an hour. The match started on a contentious note, with both red cards for Rennes happening within the first 10 minutes. Mahdi Camara, a summer arrival from Saint-Etienne, was sent off just four minutes into the match, followed by Christopher Wooh's dismissal in the ninth minute.
Sambou Soumano scored the lone goal for Rennes in the fourth minute of first-half added time, a well-taken effort that caught the Marseille defence off-guard. Despite the early setbacks, Rennes coach Habib Beye expressed the need for more aggression from his team.
On the other side of the pitch, Lille cruised to a comfortable 4-0 victory over Lorient. The scoring was opened by Tosin in the 47th minute, with Pablo Pagis and Theo Le Bris adding to the tally in the 65th and 69th minutes respectively. Tosin's goal was preceded by a red card for Christopher Wooh, who brought down the Lorient player running at goal.
The star of the show for Lille was Olivier Giroud, the French national team's all-time leading scorer. Giroud, who was brought in to replace Jonathan David, who is now playing for Juventus, scored 11 minutes into his first outing for Lille in a match against Brest. He added another goal in a more recent match, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Lorient in the 91st minute.
Coach Bruno Genesio praised Giroud for his technical mastery and contributions to the team's "real team game" by keeping possession. However, Giroud's performance was not without blemishes. He missed a penalty kick in the match, which he described as a "slight blemish."
Meanwhile, Rennes coach Habib Beye commended Giroud's teammate, Mamadou Fofana, for his performance against Marseille. Fofana, who was brought in as a substitute, helped stabilise the defence and played a crucial role in securing the victory.
In other team news, Przemyslaw Frankowski was injured, causing Mousa Al-Tamari to be dropped due to tardiness at a pre-match meeting. Mikayil Faye was also suspended for Sunday's game after oversleeping and missing the season-opening win over Marseille.
Opta, a statistical service, reported that this was a unique occurrence in Ligue 1 records since 1992, with two players from the same team being sent off so soon after the opening whistle. This incident underscores the importance of discipline and focus for both Rennes and Lille as they continue their respective campaigns.
