Global Auto Manufacturers' Electric Vehicle Approaches: Continuation from EU Brands (Series - Installment 2)

=============================================================================

In the ongoing race towards carbon neutrality, several automakers are making significant strides in battery technology and electric vehicle (EV) production. Here's a round-up of the latest developments:

Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz has set an ambitious goal to achieve net carbon neutrality by 2039. To reach this target, the company is actively developing all-solid-state batteries and is investing in lithium material companies like Vulcan Energy Resources Limited and Responsible Lithium Partnership. Over 50% of Mercedes-Benz's passenger car sales are expected to be battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) by 2030. The company also procures cells and assembles battery packs in-house. Mercedes-Benz has formed strategic alliances with CATL and Farasis Energy.

Volkswagen (VW)

VW's "Way to ZERO" initiative targets complete carbon neutrality by 2050. The company has introduced the "Unified Cell" battery and plans to launch several BEV models in the coming years. VW is also collaborating with Umicore N.V. for key battery materials. To further boost its battery production capabilities, VW is planning to transition to in-house battery production with their next-generation platform, SSP.

Renault

Renault is actively investing in battery technology, particularly all-solid-state battery development, in collaboration with Ampere. The French automaker is striving for a complete shift to BEVs in Europe by 2030. Renault has secured lithium supply from Vulcan Energy Resources of Australia. The company is focusing on five key business areas, including EVs and software, high-end zero-emission vehicles, mobility services, materials, and battery recycling.

BMW

BMW has been actively involved in battery technology development, partnering with companies like Solid Power, Our Next Energy, and Livent Corporation. In 2022, BMW introduced 15 electric vehicles and plans to launch the next generation BEV, Neue Klasse, in 2025. BMW has a strategy of procuring cells under long-term supply contracts. The company is also investing in lithium materials companies like Livent Corporation and Mangrove Lithium.

Stellantis

Stellantis is rapidly increasing its commitment to electric vehicles. The company is partnering with various battery manufacturers, including Lyten, Inc., and Factorial Energy Inc. Stellantis is transitioning to nickel-cobalt-free batteries and is planning to invest significantly to increase battery production capacity. The company is also collaborating with Solid Power and Our Next Energy for all-solid-state battery research.

As the race towards carbon neutrality heats up, it's clear that these automakers are taking bold steps to lead the way in sustainable mobility. With innovative battery technology, strategic partnerships, and a focus on EV production, these companies are shaping the future of the automotive industry.
