Global Leaders Convene in Tianjin, China for SCO Summit
Headline: World Leaders Convene at Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in Tianjin
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, a significant Eurasian political, economic, and security gathering, is currently underway in Tianjin, China. This two-day event brings together leaders from more than 20 nations, making it the largest regional organization by geographic scope and population.
Among the attendees are Russian President Vladimir Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. This summit marks Modi's first visit to China since 2018.
The focus of the summit is to promote regional peace, stability, and cooperation, with a particular emphasis on countering terrorism, extremism, and separatism. In line with this, the discussions between Modi and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy centered on restoring peace and stability in the region.
The SCO summit also involves multiple bilateral meetings to be held on its sidelines. One of these meetings is expected to be between Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping. This meeting comes as relations between the two countries show tentative signs of thawing after a 2020 border clash.
Russia's Foreign Ministry has expressed concerns regarding the reimposition of sanctions against Iran by Britain, France, and Germany last week. They warn that such actions could lead to "irreparable consequences." It remains to be seen if this issue will be discussed during Putin's scheduled talks with Pezeshkian on Iran's nuclear program.
The summit is followed by a military parade in Beijing marking 80 years since the end of World War II. Some 26 world leaders, including North Korea's Kim Jong Un, are expected to attend this parade following the SCO summit.
Recent tariff disputes between China and the United States have potentially brought the two countries closer, and it will be interesting to observe any developments in their relationship during this summit.
The SCO comprises China, India, Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus. The organization also includes 16 more countries as observers or "dialogue partners."
As the summit progresses, we can expect a number of significant discussions and potential agreements to emerge, shaping the future of this vast and diverse region.
