Global Scheme Unveiled: Criminals Attempted to Export Hundreds of Illegally Acquired Vehicles Globally, Believing They Would Escape Legality
In a significant development, eight individuals from Southeast Michigan have been indicted for their alleged involvement in a sophisticated car theft and international smuggling operation.
The operation, which spanned from July 2023 to August 2025, saw the theft of various high-end vehicles, including BMW X5s, Dodge Durangos, Dodge Rams, Range Rovers, Ford Broncos, Chevrolet Camaros, and more. Video evidence obtained by the Metro Detroit News shows a Cadillac Escalade, a Chevrolet Corvette, and at least two Ram TRXs among the stolen vehicles.
However, the specific high-end vehicles involved in the alleged scheme, as detailed by the DOJ, remain unspecified. The Metro Detroit News, on the other hand, has reported the types of high-end cars involved in the operation.
The stolen vehicles were collected at commercial and industrial lots, with over 350 vehicles recovered in total. The cars were hidden in shipping containers and routed through port cities for export, with the intention of shipping them around the globe.
The indicted individuals face conspiracy to transport stolen vehicles charges, with penalties reaching up to 5 years and a $250,000 fine. They also face transporting stolen vehicles charges, with penalties reaching up to 10 years and a $250,000 fine.
The eight men indicted are Haydar Al Haydari, Karar Alnakash, Abbas Al Othman, Mohammed Al Hilo, Moustapha Al Fetlawi, Terrill Davis, David Roshinsky Williams, and Mohammed Al Abboodi.
ICE HSI Detroit Acting Special Agent Matthew Stentz emphasized the impact of the case, stating, "The recovery of these stolen vehicles is a significant step in dismantling this criminal organisation and protecting our community from the harm caused by auto theft."
The thefts of these vehicles are particularly significant as they were part of Michigan's car culture, making the recovery a relief for many in the community. The evidence in the case was taken by Trans-RAK International.
