Golf star Rory McIlroy discusses the significant upcoming Ryder Cup chance and his unique bond with caddie Harry Diamond.
Rory McIlroy, the four-time winner this year, is gearing up for two significant events in his golfing calendar - the BMW PGA Championship in England and the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in the United States.
The Northern Irish golfer, who recently clinched the Irish Open and completed his career Grand Slam by winning the Masters in April, has had a successful year. However, he has experienced defeat away from home at Hazeltine in 2016 and Whistling Straits in 2021.
McIlroy's caddie, Harry Diamond, has been a constant companion throughout his journey. The duo, who have won multiple Ryder Cups, FedEx Cups, Players Championships, and the Masters together, share a unique bond that McIlroy values greatly. He calls it "very special."
As McIlroy prepares for the Wentworth tournament, his mind is not only on the upcoming BMW PGA Championship but also on the Ryder Cup. The last time Europe won the Ryder Cup in the US was in 2012 at Medinah, a victory that McIlroy contributed to by securing three points for the team.
Luke Donald, who will captain the European Ryder Cup team at the 2025 event, believes there is a big opportunity for the European team to do something special in the Ryder Cup. He will be joined by Vice-Captain Edoardo Molinari, and fellow vice captains Francesco and Luke, who have both played in previous Ryder Cups.
Justin Rose is also part of the European team for the Ryder Cup. The event will take place at Bethpage Black, two weeks after the BMW PGA Championship, providing McIlroy with a chance to showcase his skills on both sides of the Atlantic.
McIlroy, who is closer to the end of his career than the start, does not plan to retire soon. However, he does not want to continue playing golf at an advanced age. Instead, he intends to keep his membership on certain tours but play where he wants to play, in locations he loves, and in the Majors and Ryder Cup.
As McIlroy embarks on this new chapter in his career, fans and golf enthusiasts alike are eager to see how he will perform in the upcoming events.
