Google is ceasing manufacturing of the Nest Protect Smoke Alarm and the Nest Yale Door Lock. If you're interested in these items, now's the time to grab them while they're on sale.
In a recent announcement, Google has revealed that it will be discontinuing the Google Nest Protect and the Google Nest x Yale Lock in 2025. This decision marks a shift in Google's strategy, as the tech giant is now focusing on joint partnerships with established security companies.
One of these partnerships is with Yale, with Google collaborating to develop the Yale Smart Lock with Matter. This new lock is set to be compatible with all Matter-compatible devices, promising seamless integration with smart home systems.
Another collaboration is with First Alert, where Google and the company will partner to create an interconnected network of home fire safety systems. The First Alert Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm is set to retail for $129 and will be available later this year. Notably, this alarm will connect directly to the Google Home app, allowing for voice control.
The Nest x Yale Lock, which was launched in 2018, and the Nest Protect, which debuted in 2013, are both currently on sale on Amazon. The Nest Protect Smart Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Detector is currently available for $250, a discount of $17 from the original price. However, some recent complaints suggest that scarcity is an issue surrounding the second-gen Google Nest Protect.

Despite the discontinuation of the Nest Protect and the Nest x Yale Lock, both devices will continue receiving regular updates and will work to full capacity. The Nest Protect Smart Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Detector will receive on-schedule security updates and will work to full functionality through its 10-year expiration date.
Google's decision to discontinue its own Nest Protect smoke alarm and Nest x Yale Lock, and to focus on collaborations with established security companies, is a strategic move to leverage Matter compatibility, rather than continuing to produce its own hardware in these categories. This approach is expected to bring more interoperability and convenience to smart home systems in the future.
