Google Transition to Tasks Eliminates Location Reminders: Detailed Functionality Explanation
Google has announced that it will be implementing an update to Google Keep, known as the Google Tasks switch, in the second half of 2025. This migration will bring several changes to the popular note-taking and reminder app.
Firstly, the Reminders page in the navigation drawer of Google Keep will remain, but with some modifications. Reminders can now be marked as complete from various locations, including mobile devices, Keep notes, and Tasks or Calendar details. However, location-based reminders will no longer be supported in Google Keep. Instead, locations inputted for reminders will appear in the Tasks description field.
Tasks with dates beyond the year 3000 are adjusted to the year 2900, and tasks that repeat more than every 1,000 days, weeks, months, or years will be adjusted to repeat every 1,000 units. This adjustment aims to maintain the functionality of the app while avoiding potential issues caused by excessively long repetition periods.
The name of a reminder can only be changed through Tasks or Calendar, not Keep. This change is part of the integration of Google Keep with Google Tasks and Calendar. Long reminders may have their titles shortened when they migrate to Tasks to ensure readability.
New reminders in the updated Google Keep will be saved as tasks. Tasks can be viewed, edited, and completed from Calendar, Keep, Tasks, and Gemini. A list of all "Pending tasks" from the last 365 days can be found in the "All-day" section of the current day's calendar.
It's important to note that Google has previously removed location-based notifications from Reminders and will stop sending reminder notifications from Google Keep altogether. Instead, Calendar or Tasks will handle alerts for the migrated reminders.
The upcoming update to Google Keep will also bring a change in the limit for tasks in Google Tasks. The limit is set at 100,000, and older reminders may not migrate if the limit is exceeded. Changing the title of a Keep note does not update the reminder's title.
Lastly, in the Calendar grid and Tasks list, reminders will be badged as "From Keep," with a tap opening the original note. There are no publicly available dates or official announcements regarding the replacement of Google Tasks by Google Keep.
Stay tuned for more updates as we approach the second half of 2025, when these changes are expected to take place.
