Cash-Sniffing Dogs Prove Successful in Lower Saxony

In Lower Saxony, Germany, the use of currency-sniffing dogs by the local police forces has been hailed as a success by the Interior Ministry. These canine investigators, trained in both drug and cash detection, have been instrumental in several significant finds.

In East Frisia and Emsland, these dogs have discovered over 110,000 euros in various searches. One notable find was in Meppen, where Cody from the Osnabrück police force uncovered over 80,000 euros hidden in cans and safes. Since 2020, Cody alone has found over 400,000 euros.

The deployment of these dogs has become a police standard in Lower Saxony, with 39 currently in service, assigned to various forces across the state. These dogs can detect both fresh and used banknotes, as well as high-quality counterfeits.

Before 2014, police officers manually searched buildings and cars for cash, with less success. However, over a decade ago, drug-sniffing dogs in the federal state started receiving additional training to also detect cash. Many of these dogs were previously only drug-sniffing dogs and required a short additional training.

The dogs are rewarded with toys or food when they find banknotes. On average, these dogs have been in service for eight years. Their deployment is restricted to searches where there is a corresponding court order.

The Interior Ministry states that the combined qualification of drug and banknote-sniffing dogs has proven effective. Drug seizures often also involve cash, as reported by the ministry. It is estimated that 70 to 80 percent of all circulating banknotes have drug traces.

However, without concrete, location-specific data or studies related to Lower Saxony, no definitive statement can be made about their performance there. For precise information about cash-sniffing dog programs or success rates in Lower Saxony, it would require consulting direct sources from local law enforcement or official police reports from that region.

Despite this, the use of these dogs has been a significant addition to the police forces in Lower Saxony, with Hannover police also making use of these canine investigators for cash detection. The effectiveness of these dogs can vary depending on the training quality, environmental factors, and how well the cash is concealed. Regardless, their contribution to the fight against crime in Lower Saxony cannot be understated.
