Government election postponement confirmed amidst administrative adjustments by the Minister
Labour Government Undergoes Major Reshuffle Following Angela Rayner's Resignation
The Labour government has undergone a significant reshuffle, marking a new chapter for the party, following the resignation of Angela Rayner due to a breach of the ministerial code. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced the reshuffle on Friday, with several key appointments and role changes taking place.
Angela Rayner, who served as Sir Keir Starmer's deputy, stepped down after it was revealed she failed to pay enough stamp duty on a seaside flat she purchased this year. An independent ethics investigation found that her actions had breached the ministerial code, but it also noted that she acted in "good faith."
Following her resignation, Sir Keir Starmer has made some notable appointments. Yvette Cooper has been appointed as the Foreign Secretary, replacing former foreign secretary David Lammy who now holds the position of Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary. Shabana Mahmood has become the new Home Secretary, replacing Yvette Cooper.
In addition, Darren Jones, the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, has been appointed. He dismissed suggestions that the reshuffle could delay the Prime Minister's "phase two" of Government, stating that it marks a second chapter for the Labour government. This chapter, according to Darren Jones, is about delivering on their election promises.
The reshuffle also saw the sacking of two ministers, the promotion of two, and the moving of 10 into different roles. Sir Keir Starmer emphasised that he now has the "strongest team" in place to help him deliver on the Labour government's promises.
A wider junior ministerial reshuffle is expected to take place on Saturday. The Labour government is facing maneuvering for the deputy leadership role vacated by Angela Rayner, who was popular among grassroots and seen as a bridge between No 10 and the wider party.
Despite predictions of "splits" within Labour following the scandal by Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, Darren Jones dismissed this idea, stating that the Labour Party is not going to split and there won't be an early election. He also stated that the government is not in crisis following Angela Rayner's resignation.
Sir Laurie Magnus, the ethics watchdog, stated that Ms Rayner's failure to settle her full stamp duty liability, which was only established following media scrutiny of her tax affairs, led him to consider the ministerial code had been breached.
The first major reshuffle of Sir Keir Starmer's premiership has certainly shaken up the Labour government. However, with a new team in place and a renewed focus on delivering on their election promises, the party is looking to move forward and continue to govern effectively.
