Malaysia Gears Up for Autonomous Vehicle Technology

The Malaysian government is taking significant steps to prepare for the implementation of autonomous vehicle technology, as highlighted by Gobind Singh Deo, the Minister of the Ministry of Digital. In a series of discussions with the Road Transport Department (JPJ), the focus is on the development of an autonomous vehicle network.

Deo emphasized the importance of proactive measures to ensure that Malaysia is ready - legally and infrastructurally - for this technological shift. He announced that the Malaysian Ministry of Digital has initiated discussions with JPJ to develop a legal framework for autonomous or driverless vehicles.

At present, there are no specific laws in Malaysia governing autonomous vehicles, including systems like the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART). However, the government is actively studying and discussing the development of a legal framework to regulate the operation of autonomous vehicles on public roads.

Anthony Loke, the Transport Minister, stated in September 2020 that the ministry is studying a framework for new legislation to regulate the operation of autonomous vehicles. The transition towards the adoption of autonomous vehicles requires early preparations in multiple areas, including safety standards, digital infrastructure, and data protection.

In line with these preparations, the launch of Malaysia's first Vehicle Forensics Laboratory was announced by Gobind Singh Deo. This laboratory will play a crucial role in ensuring safety standards for autonomous vehicles.

As autonomous vehicles are already being used in other countries, Malaysia is considering early preparations for their operation. The need for a legal framework to ensure the safety and data protection of autonomous vehicle ecosystems cannot be overstated.

However, there is no specific information available about discussions in Malaysia regarding the introduction of a separate legal framework for autonomous vehicles. Nonetheless, the focus remains on ensuring that Malaysia is ready to embrace the future of transportation.
