Government initiates 6,000 won cinema ticket discount coupons distribution, a repeated move

Headline: Culture Ministry and Korean Film Council Distribute Second Batch of Movie Ticket Discount Vouchers

The Culture Ministry, in collaboration with the Korean Film Council, is set to distribute 1.88 million movie ticket discount vouchers worth 6,000 won each on September 8. This move is intended to help stimulate domestic consumption and support the struggling film industry.

The vouchers can be claimed via the websites and apps of major multiplex chains like CGV, Lotte Cinema, Megabox, and CineQ. Two vouchers will be automatically added to each member's account. Once a theater's allocation is depleted, the discount will no longer be available.

These vouchers can also be used at independent and arthouse theaters, small cinemas, senior-focused venues, and other locations across the country. A dedicated help line (070-4027-0279) has been set up to guide users through the ticketing process via websites or apps for those unfamiliar with online reservations.

The Korean government had originally allocated 27.1 billion won ($19.4 million) from its budget to distribute 4.5 million movie ticket discount vouchers. In July 2021, 4.5 million cinema ticket discounts were claimed, but approximately 1.7 million of them went unused before being redistributed in September 2021. This round redistributes the remaining vouchers that went unused by the Sept. 2 deadline.

It is worth noting that any unused vouchers in member accounts will expire automatically. Total movie theater attendance in 2024 reached 123.13 million, roughly 54 percent of the pre-pandemic figure of 226.68 million in 2019.

The Korean government's move to give out movie ticket discount vouchers comes as the country's film industry continues to face challenges. The second distribution of vouchers is a testament to the government's commitment to reviving the industry and encouraging domestic consumption.

With these vouchers, moviegoers can enjoy a discounted cinema experience at participating theaters. It's a great opportunity to catch up on the latest films or revisit old favourites. So, mark your calendars for September 8 and get ready to claim your discount vouchers!
