In a display of swift action and compassion, Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State responded to a traumatic traffic accident that occurred along the Benin-Auchi Road. The collision involved four vehicles, including three commercial mini buses loaded with passengers and a Venza.
The accident, caused by a driver who was reportedly driving against traffic, resulted in a major traffic standstill. The governor, who was en route to Irrua in Esan Central Local Government Area, encountered the heavy gridlock after the bypass.
Upon arriving at the scene, Governor Okpebholo alighted from his vehicle to assess the situation. He found several victims in critical condition and bleeding profusely. Witnesses reported that bystanders were more concerned with recording videos instead of offering assistance.
Undeterred, Governor Okpebholo sprang into action. He personally supervised the process of loading injured passengers into an emergency vehicle, which he had ordered two of his security Hilux vehicles to be converted into. Over a dozen injured passengers, including a woman with severe injuries, were lifted into the waiting emergency vehicle.
The governor remained at the accident scene until the victims were safely conveyed to a medical facility. An eyewitness remarked that Governor Okpebholo demonstrated leadership with compassion and action at the scene.
After ensuring the victims were safely on their way to the hospital for urgent treatment, Governor Okpebholo continued his journey to Irrua. He also contacted the Nigerian Red Cross Society, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and local health services to assist and support the victims.
The governor's quick response and compassionate approach to the accident have been widely praised. His actions serve as a reminder of his commitment to the well-being of the people of Edo State.
