Grandmother grants grandson's desire of experiencing the majestic 'Horse of Glory'
A tragic accident occurred at Elevador da Glória on Friday, leaving the community in shock and mourning. The historic elevator, a popular tourist attraction in Lisbon, was the site of a devastating incident that claimed several lives.
Among the victims were four employees of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Lisbon, who were honoured in a mass attended by Carlos Moedas and Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the President of the Republic. The mass was held at the Basilica da Estrela in memory of the victims.
The President of the Republic also visited the monument at Praça dos Restauradores, expressing messages of solidarity for those who suffered losses. Hundreds of people passed by the memorial, filling the area with prayers and moments of silence. Many continue to gather there, paying their respects to the victims.
One of the victims was a motorman, whose body was at the Basilica da Estrela for the last farewell of the Carris employees. A grandmother, Maria Rosa, fulfilled the request of her grandson who loved riding the Elevador da Glória. He had said to her, "What a shame, blow up balloons, grandma, to go to heaven".
The grandson, currently in Geneva, referred to the Elevador da Glória as the "Glória Pony". No new information was provided about him or Natalia, who escaped the tragedy during a visit due to a change of plans. Natalia, who lives in England, promised her daughters to make images of a place significant to her parents. She found the scene of the tragedy horrible and cried a lot.
The Prime Minister of Luxembourg visited the memorial to pay condolences to the victims and their families. Witnesses at the scene expressed sorrow and shock, stating it was a horrible event and they cried a lot. The funeral for the motorman is scheduled for this Saturday in Oleiros.
As the community continues to mourn, the tragic accident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety and the fragility of life. The Elevador da Glória, once a symbol of Lisbon's vibrant spirit, now stands as a poignant reminder of the lives lost and the strength of the community that continues to come together in times of hardship.
