Gigabit Broadband Expansion Moves Forward in Karlsruhe Region
The Karlsruhe region is leading the way in broadband expansion, with over 120,000 fiber optic connections expected to be available throughout the district by 2028. This ambitious project is part of a larger digital strategy in the state of Baden-Württemberg, which has set clear priorities for broadband expansion.
The latest development in this endeavour was marked by the official operation of a section of the municipal fiber optic network in Waghaeusel. Minister Thomas Strobl, District Administrator Dr. Christoph Schnaudigel, and Mayor Thomas Deuschle were present for the occasion. The city of Waghaeusel will receive around 4.3 million euros for a new funding project, creating 1,344 connections, including a school, 173 commercial enterprises, and 30 public buildings.
Deutsche Glasfaser is supplementing the funded expansion in Waghaeusel with a large-scale, private economic expansion. This collaboration between state-funded expansion and expansion by private companies has demonstrated tangible successes, as seen in the expansion of fiber optic networks in Waghaeusel and Weingarten in Baden. In Weingarten, 181 new connections will be created, including a school, 32 commercial enterprises, and six public buildings, with the municipality receiving funding of 556,672 euros.
Minister Thomas Strobl has reiterated the commitment to the broadband expansion in Baden-Württemberg, emphasizing the importance of cooperation instead of overlap. He has also highlighted that this is teamwork for a digital, innovative future. The 'Glasfaserpakt Baden-Württemberg' is a binding agreement for broadband expansion in the state, and binding rules have been established to ensure its successful implementation.
The Karlsruhe district has consistently relied on a combination of state and federal funding, as well as expansion by private network operators since 2014. The Karlsruhe Circle plans to complete the full fiber optic network expansion by the first quarter of 2028, with the rollout starting in the fourth quarter of 2025. The network activation will occur continuously based on construction phases.
The new fiber optic networks in the district of Karlsruhe are intended to enable education without loading bars, medical consultations via video in minutes instead of kilometers, global markets from the home office, and increased security through modern communication technologies.
